Travelling with a dog means finding a place that truly welcomes your four-legged companion – not just tolerates them. In Leutasch, that search ends the moment you arrive. This quiet alpine valley in Tyrol is tailor-made for dogs: wide meadows, a crystal-clear mountain river, barely any traffic and hiking trails in every direction. And the Wilderer Chalets sit right in the middle of it all.
Leutasch – a valley built for dogs
The Leutasch valley stretches for more than ten kilometres and sits at roughly 1,100 to 1,400 metres above sea level. For dogs, that means fresh mountain air, cool temperatures even in midsummer and a landscape that rewards every step. Unterleutasch runs right along the Leutascher Ache – a glittering mountain river where dogs can splash to their hearts' content. No crowds, no rush hour, no noise. Just pure nature.
The best walks with your dog
Along the Leutascher Ache (easy, 1–3 hours)
The riverside path along the Leutascher Ache is the classic route for dog owners. From Unterleutasch the path heads upstream through meadows and open woodland – almost entirely flat, suitable for all ages and all breeds. The river is right beside you the whole way. Countless spots invite you to pause while your dog wades in, drinks and simply takes in the world.
Through the fields of Weidach (easy, 1 hour)
Starting directly from the Wilderer Chalets, a farm track leads through the open meadows of Weidach. Head out early and you'll often have the whole landscape to yourselves – ideal for dogs who love to sniff and roam freely. The view across to the Wetterstein and Karwendel peaks turns every morning walk into something special.
Loop walk Leutasch-Kirchplatzl (easy to moderate, 1.5 hours)
A slightly longer loop passes by the historic Kirchplatzl and winds through several villages of the sprawling Leutasch valley. Minimal road traffic, plenty of green space and constant opportunities to take a short detour into the countryside. Perfect for dogs who like to explore and take their time.
Why dogs love Leutasch
What makes dogs go wild for Leutasch is the sheer variety of smells and sensations. Alpine herbs on the mountain meadows, spring water, forest floor, river stones – for a dog it's an endless sensory journey. Add to that the exceptional calm of the valley: no crowds, no stress. Even anxious or shy dogs often settle remarkably quickly here and find their rhythm.
